Papers of Jean Kern, 1921-1988.

Diaries, correspondence, published articles, book reviews, clippings, and, primarily, photographs, which illustrate the richness of Kern's international experiences, her broad interest in the humanities, the focus of her professional career after her retirement in 1975, and her personal life. Included are a diary from 1929 to 1931 written while Kern was an undergraduate at Wisconsin and conference programs of the International Association of University Professors of. English. Subjects include English literature and drama and women in the 18th century. The papers also include the minutes of the Greater Iowa City Housing Fellowship (1990-1993) which document Kern's concerns for affordable housing in Iowa City. Correspondents include Mary Anne Schofield.

Kern received her doctorate in English literature with emphasis in 18th century drama from the University of Wisconsin in 1936. Because her husband, Alexander, held a teaching position at the University of Iowa, Kern was prevented from gaining a permanent position there due to the anti-nepotism policy in force in the 1930s.
